The Connection Between the Liver, Spleen & Kidneys
In Chinese Medicine, we don’t look at the body in parts. We look at how everything works together. Because true vitality — steady energy, clear skin, emotional balance doesn’t come from one system working well. It comes from how well your systems are communicating. And three of the most important players in this are: the Liver, the Spleen, and the Kidneys.
🌿 The Spleen: Your Foundation
The Spleen is responsible for digestion, energy production, creating Blood and transforming nourishment into something usable. It’s your daily fuel source.
When it’s strong:
you feel steady
your digestion is smooth
your skin is nourished
When it’s weak:
you feel tired
bloated
heavy or puffy
But the Spleen doesn’t work alone.
✨ The Liver: Movement & Flow
The Liver’s role is to keep everything moving.
It regulates the flow of Qi (energy), emotions and circulation.
When the Liver is flowing well:
you feel calm but motivated
your digestion moves smoothly
your body feels open and responsive
When it’s stuck (very common):
digestion becomes sluggish
bloating increases
tension builds (jaw, neck, shoulders)
mood becomes irritable or overwhelmed
🌿 The Kidneys: Your Deep Reserve
The Kidneys are your foundation of vitality over time.
They govern your long-term energy reserves, aging, longevity, hormones, reproductive health and resilience. Think of them as your battery.
When they’re supported:
you feel deeply rested
your energy is sustainable
your body recovers well
When they’re depleted:
fatigue runs deeper
burnout becomes harder to recover from
aging can feel accelerated
✨ How They Work Together
This is where it all connects.
👉 The Spleen creates energy
👉 The Liver moves that energy
👉 The Kidneys store and sustain it
If one is off, it affects the others.
🌿 What This Looks Like in Real Life
1. Weak Spleen → Not enough energy created
Even if the Liver is trying to move things, there’s not enough to work with. This shows up as:
→ fatigue
→ dull skin
→ poor digestion
2. Stagnant Liver → Energy isn’t moving
The Spleen may be creating energy, but it’s not circulating properly. This leads to:
→ bloating
→ tension
→ emotional ups and downs
→ breakouts
3. Weak Kidneys → No deep reserve
Even if things are functioning day-to-day, the body has no backup. Which can cause you to feel:
→ burnout
→ hormonal imbalances
→ low resilience
✨ Why This Matters for Your Glow
Your glow is a reflection of:
how well you create energy (Spleen)
how well it moves (Liver)
how well it’s sustained (Kidneys)
When all three are supported:
your skin looks brighter
your energy feels stable
your body feels more resilient
🌿 The Patterns I See Most
Most people today are dealing with:
Spleen deficiency (overthinking, poor digestion, irregular eating)
Liver stagnation (stress, emotional holding, tension)
Kidney depletion (burnout, pushing through fatigue)
This combination creates: feeling tired but wired, bloated but not nourished, doing everything “right” but not feeling well.
✨ How I Approach This in Practice
In my treatments, I’m always looking at:
how to support digestion (Spleen)
how to restore flow (Liver)
how to protect long-term energy (Kidneys)
Because working with just one is never enough.
🌿 How You Can Begin Supporting This
Keep it simple:
eat warm, nourishing foods regularly
create space for movement (walking, stretching, breath)
reduce constant stimulation and stress
prioritize rest in a real way (not just sleep, but slowing down)
Your body isn’t meant to feel like a constant effort. When these systems are working together, things begin to feel easier.
Your energy becomes more reliable.
Your digestion more comfortable.
Your skin more alive.
Not because you forced it — but because your body is finally supported.
