Your Best Summer Yet: Timeless TCM Wisdom for a Vibrant Season
There is something special about summer. The days stretch longer. Meals move outdoors. The pace of life softens, even if only a little.
In Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the Fire element—the energy of warmth, joy, connection, and expansion. It is the most outward-facing season of the year. Nature is in full bloom, and we are invited to bloom alongside it.
Yet many people move through summer feeling exhausted, dehydrated, overstimulated, and somehow busier than ever. Summer is a season to fully inhabit.
Here are some of my favorite ways to support your body, mind, and skin throughout the warmer months.
Let Yourself Rise With The Sun
Summer is the most yang season of the year. Yang energy is active, bright, social, and outward moving.
This is the time of year when your body naturally wants to wake earlier, spend more time outside, and engage with life. Instead of fighting that rhythm, lean into it. Open the windows. Take your coffee outside. Go for an early morning walk before the heat arrives. Even ten minutes of morning sunlight can help regulate sleep, mood, and energy for the rest of the day.
Eat Seasonally
One of the simplest ways to support health is to eat what nature is already providing. Summer offers an abundance of foods that naturally cool and hydrate the body.
Think:
watermelon
cucumber
strawberries
peaches
mint
basil
fresh herbs
zucchini
tomatoes
These foods contain exactly the qualities the body tends to crave during hotter weather. That said, this is not permission to live exclusively on iced coffee and smoothies. Your digestion still benefits from warmth. A balanced approach is best.
One of My Favorite Summer Hydration Upgrades
Skip the fluorescent sports drinks.
Try this instead:
Summer Mineral Refresher
1 litre filtered water
Juice of 1 lemon
Pinch of sea salt
A few slices cucumber
Fresh mint
Let sit for an hour and enjoy throughout the day.
Why I Love This Summer Mineral Refresher: During the summer months, we naturally lose more fluids and minerals through heat, activity, and sweating. While plain water is important, hydration isn't just about water—it's also about replacing the electrolytes that help your cells actually absorb and utilize that water. The sea salt provides trace minerals and sodium to support hydration, while lemon offers a refreshing source of vitamin C and helps stimulate digestion. Cucumber adds cooling properties that are especially welcome during hot weather, and fresh mint helps clear heat and leaves you feeling refreshed. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, summer heat can consume both fluids and Qi. This simple drink helps replenish fluids gently, supports digestion, and provides a cooling effect without relying on ice-cold beverages that can weaken digestive function.
It's one of those beautifully simple habits that leaves you feeling more energized, clear-headed, and hydrated.
Protect Your Energy, Not Just Your Skin
Most people remember sunscreen. Far fewer remember energy management. Summer can be deceptively draining.
More social events. More travel. More stimulation. More late nights.
In Chinese Medicine, excessive heat can scatter the Heart and consume fluids. One of the best things you can do is build moments of quiet into your summer.
Sit outside without your phone. Read under a tree. Watch a sunset. Take an afternoon nap when life allows.
The Summer Skin Secret
One of the most overlooked beauty tips is circulation.
When circulation is strong and fluids are moving well, skin tends to appear:
brighter
more radiant
more even-toned
less puffy
This is one reason I love facial massage during the summer months. A few minutes of gentle facial massage in the morning can support lymphatic flow and help the face look more refreshed naturally. Bonus points if you keep your gua sha tool in the fridge.
Weekend Summer Ritual
If I could prescribe a summer weekend, it would look something like this:
A slow morning.
A nourishing breakfast.
A walk outside.
A farmer's market.
Fresh flowers on the kitchen counter.
A good book.
Dinner shared with people you enjoy.
Watching the sunset
Simple pleasures are deeply medicinal. Summer reminds us of this.
The Best Time To Start Acupuncture
Most people wait until something hurts before they book an appointment.
A headache. A bad back. Digestive issues. Poor sleep.
But some of my favorite treatments happen when there is "nothing wrong."
Summer is actually one of the best times to begin regular acupuncture care. The body is generally more relaxed. People have more capacity to receive treatment. And we're often working from a place of optimization rather than crisis.
Think of it like tending a garden. It's easier to support health while things are flourishing than waiting until everything feels overgrown.
Acupuncture during the summer can support:
stress resilience
digestion
sleep
energy
recovery
skin health
nervous system regulation
Sometimes the best treatment is the one you receive before you desperately need it.
A Summer Dinner I Come Back To Again and Again
Grilled salmon. New potatoes. Fresh herbs. A simple cucumber salad.
Fresh berries for dessert, on homemade ice cream!
Nothing complicated. Just seasonal food prepared simply.
Let Joy Be Part of Your Wellness Routine
This might be the most important summer advice I can give.
The emotion associated with the Fire element is joy.
Joy. Connection. Laughter. Meaningful conversation. Moments that make you feel fully alive.
These experiences nourish us in ways no supplement ever could. Summer is the perfect season to seek them out.
If spring is the season of becoming, summer is the season of living.
Of saying yes to the walk. The swim. The patio dinner. The road trip. The slow morning. The extra hour outside.
Health is found in what we fully allow ourselves to enjoy.
And if Chinese Medicine teaches us anything, it's that harmony comes from living in rhythm with the season we're in.
Summer is almost here. Time to make the most of it.
