Lymphatic System 101
There’s a system in your body that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. But when it’s not working well, you feel it. You might notice puffiness, heaviness, sluggish digestion, low energy, skin that feels congested or dull. And often, it’s not about doing more. It’s about helping your body move what’s already there.
This is the role of your lymphatic system.
What the Lymphatic System Actually Does
Your lymphatic system is responsible for:
moving fluid through the body
clearing waste and cellular byproducts
supporting immune function
maintaining balance in your tissues
Unlike your blood, which is pumped by the heart, your lymphatic system relies on movement, breath and circulation to function properly.
Why Things Get “Stuck”
Modern life doesn’t support this system very well. Long periods of sitting, stress, shallow breathing and overstimulation can slow things down.
When lymph isn’t moving well, you may feel:
puffy
stagnant
heavy
inflamed
This isn’t something to “fix” aggressively. It’s something to gently support.
The TCM Perspective
In Chinese Medicine, we don’t use the term “lymphatic system,” but we absolutely treat what it represents.
This relates closely to:
Spleen → fluid transformation
Liver → movement and flow
Lung → distribution of fluids
When these systems are functioning well fluids are properly transformed, circulation is smooth, your body feels light and clear.
When they’re not dampness accumulates, stagnation builds and your body feels heavy or congested.
Signs Your Lymphatic System Needs Support
You might notice:
puffiness in the face (especially in the morning)
swelling in hands, feet, or legs
bloating or fluid retention
frequent congestion
skin that feels dull or congested
feeling “sluggish” or heavy
These are subtle signals — but important ones.
How I Support Lymphatic Flow
This doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, the best support is simple and consistent.
Movement
10k steps per day → helps pump lymph through the body. If you’re going to prioritize ONE THING to make the biggest difference - this is it! #2 is time on your vibration plate! These things really stimulate lymphatic drainage - you’ll likely get itchy and have to pee after (this is a good sign!)
Breath
Deep, slow breathing → stimulates lymphatic flow. Great to do first thing — waking up your lungs, oxygenating your cells and getting your brain online.
Heat
Hot baths, &castor oil packs → encourage circulation and movement. Hot baths are underrated. We are constantly exposed to chemicals, toxins, pesticides, etc. that build up in our bodies and cause lymphatic congestion. A hot bath heats up the body internally to melt these blockages and dissolve the congestion. Extra bonus — add 2 cups of epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda with a few drops of juniper essential oil (or your favorite blend!)
Touch
Lymphatic massage, gua sha, dry brushing → physically moves fluid. Dry brushing and gua sha are easy to incorporate at home, as are lymphatic massage strokes… more on that to come soon..
Nutrition That Supports Lymph
Think: light, warm, and supportive — not extreme
Focus on:
cooked vegetables
soups and broths
lightly spiced meals (ginger, turmeric)
adequate hydration — ADRENAL COCKTAILS! Many of us are chronically dehydrated even when we’re drinking water because water alone doesn’t get absorbed without the right minerals. Adrenal cocktails either contain coconut water or cream of tartar — both sources of potassium which regulates how much fluid your cells hold. When you lack potassium (which most people do) your body starts retaining water in all the wrong places. Combined with sea salt for sodium and trace minerals which your adrenal glands need to function. Together these create real, cellular hydration which will get your lymph flowing! Also in this category think: fresh fruit & fruit juice (with a pinch of salt), bone broth, herbal infusions, coconut water, spring water or RO with a pinch of salt. You can’t flush out stagnated fluid without replenishing.
Reduce:
excess cold/raw foods (especially if digestion is weak)
overly processed or heavy foods
This supports both your lymph & your Spleen.
Herbs That Can Help
From a gentle, supportive perspective:
cleavers → #1 lymphatic herb. Classified as a lymphagogue - it specifically stimulates lymphatic drainage and has a natural diuretic effect meaning swelling and fluid retention get released at the same time!
red clover → supports fluid movement. Really beneficial if you’re prone to cysts of any kind or more solid stagnations.
dandelion → supports drainage and liver function. A beautiful herb to include in the spring — the root, as a decoction, is a great alternative for coffee as it makes a dark, strong brew; the leaves, as an infusion, help stimulate drainage and flow; fresh dandelion leaves provide bitter flavor which stimulate liver function and bile production.

How Acupuncture Supports The Lymphatic System
Acupuncture supports the lymphatic system in a way that’s both direct and systemic. Rather than forcing movement, it helps the body return to a state where movement happens naturally. From a physiological perspective, acupuncture improves circulation, reduces inflammation and supports nervous system regulation. All of which directly influence how fluid moves through the body.
From a Chinese Medicine lens, acupuncture works by:
strengthening the Spleen’s ability to transform fluids
supporting the Liver’s role in keeping things moving
regulating the Lung’s distribution of fluids throughout the body
When these systems are supported, the body becomes more efficient at clearing excess fluid, reducing stagnation and maintaining balance. This is why people often notice reduced puffiness, less heaviness, improved digestion and a clearer, more “alive” feeling in the body It’s not about draining — it’s about restoring flow.
The Skin Connection
Your lymphatic system has a direct relationship with your skin. When flow is supported skin looks clearer, puffiness reduces and tone improves. When it’s sluggish congestion builds, dullness increases and swelling becomes more noticeable.
This is why facial massage and lymphatic techniques are so effective. They’re not just cosmetic — they’re functional.
The Nervous System Piece
Your body doesn’t move well when it’s in a constant state of stress. When you slow down, breathe and create space circulation improves, lymph begins to move and your body shifts into repair mode. This is why even simple rituals can have such a big impact.
A Different Way to Approach It
There’s a tendency to want to “flush everything out.” But your body doesn’t need force. It needs consistency, warmth, movement and support.
Your lymphatic system is always working for you. It just needs the right conditions to do its job well.
When you support it, you may notice:
less heaviness
more clarity
improved digestion
brighter, more alive skin
Not because you forced change — but because your body is moving again.
The 5D Facial Experience (and why it works)
My 5D Sculptural Facial Experience is designed to work with this same principle — restoring flow. While it’s often sought out for the visible results, what’s happening underneath is just as important.
Through a combination of:
deep facial massage
buccal (intraoral) work
lymphatic techniques
and body acupuncture
we’re supporting both circulation and lymphatic movement.
This allows fluid to move more freely through the face and neck, which can:
reduce puffiness
soften tension (especially in the jaw and cheeks)
improve tone and definition
enhance the natural glow of the skin
But beyond that, the treatment also supports the nervous system. And when the body feels safe and regulated, everything — including lymphatic flow — improves. It’s not just about sculpting the face. It’s about creating the conditions for your body to move, release and restore from the inside out.

There’s also something new I’ve been developing — a treatment focused more specifically on fluid movement, de-puffing and restoring lightness through the body. It blends rhythmic, intentional touch with deeper meridian-based work to support circulation, reduce stagnation and help the body release what it’s been holding onto. If you’ve been feeling heavy, puffy or like things just aren’t moving the way they should, this is a beautiful next step. More on this soon.
